Eligibility Criteria & Educational Qualification
Educational Qualification
- Candidate must have passed the Madhyamik examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or its equivalent.
- Candidate must possess elementary knowledge of computer operation with the ability to type on a computer at 20 words per minute in English or 10 words per minute in Bengali.
- The typing option (English or Bengali) must be chosen at the time of submitting the application.
- Computer and typing ability is judged only after qualification in Part-I and Part-II.
Nationality & Language
- Candidate must be a citizen of India (natural or by registration), or another national declared eligible by the Government of India (such candidates require a certificate of eligibility).
- Ability to read, write, and speak Bengali is required. Not required if mother tongue is Nepali.
- Bengali knowledge will be tested at the computer and typing test stage for candidates whose mother tongue is other than Bengali or Nepali.
Age Limit & Relaxation
- General age limit: Not below 18 years and not more than 45 years as on 01.01.2024. Date of birth must be between 2 January 1979 and 1 January 2006.
- S.C./S.T. candidates of West Bengal: 5 years relaxation in upper age limit.
- O.B.C. (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates of West Bengal: 3 years relaxation in upper age limit.
- PwBD candidates (40%+): Upper age limit relaxable up to 45 years.
- Ex-Servicemen (6+ months continuous service): Service period deducted; resultant age must not exceed maximum age limit by more than 3 years.
- S.C./S.T./O.B.C. candidates of other states are treated as general candidates; no relaxation.

Selection Process & Screening Clause
The selection under WBPSC Clerkship 2026 is based on a three-stage process:
- Part-I (Objective Type): A qualifying examination. A limited number of candidates obtaining qualifying marks are shortlisted for Part-II.
- Part-II (Conventional Type – Written): Held on a later date to be notified by the Commission. Candidates qualifying in Part-I appear for this stage.
- Test of Computer Operation and Typing: Judged only for candidates found qualified in both Part-I and Part-II. This stage also tests Bengali knowledge (if applicable).
Final Merit List: Prepared on the basis of total marks in Part-I and Part-II, provided the candidate qualifies in the computer operation and typing test. A candidate who qualifies for Part-II but does not appear in it will not be considered for the final merit list. Selected candidates also undergo a medical examination and police verification before appointment.

Negative Marking
- Part-I: 0.25 mark negative marking for each wrong answer in multiple choice questions.
- Part-II: 10% of full marks deducted if the candidate writes name, roll number, or any identifying mark in the answer script.

- Higher aggregate marks in English and Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali first.
- Higher marks in English.
- Higher age.
TA/DA
No Travel Allowance / Dearness Allowance (TA/DA) will be paid to candidates appearing for the examination.

Key Candidate Instructions
- An application, once submitted, is final. No change in category claim is entertained after final submission.
- Admission to the examination is provisional, subject to eligibility. Candidature can be cancelled at any stage, even after appointment letter issuance.
- PwBD candidates with writing limitation may use a scribe; compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour is allowed with valid Appendix-I certificate.
- Mobile phones, smart watches, Bluetooth devices, and communication devices are not allowed in examination premises. Frisking is done at entry points.
