Department of Food & Public Distribution is one of the two Departments under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. The Ministry is under the charge of Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Hon’ble Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution with effect from 11th June, 2024, Shri B. L. Verma, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Smt. Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution both with effect from 11th June, 2024.

The main function of this Department is to ensure food security for citizens of the country. The basic concept of food security globally is to ensure that all people, at all times, should get access to the basic food for their active and healthy life and is characterized by availability, access, utilization and stability of food.

The other functions of the Department are
Formulation and implementation of national policies relating to procurement, movement, storage and distribution of food grains

Implementation of the Public Distribution System (PDS) with special focus on the poor

Provision of storage facilities for the maintenance of central reserves of food grains and promotion of scientific storage

Formulation of national policies relating to export and import, Food grain stocking norms, quality control and specifications of food grains

Administration of food subsidies relating to rice, wheat and coarse grains

Policy matters relating to sugar and sugarcane sector, fixation of Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane payable by sugar factories, development and regulation of sugar industry (including training in the field of sugar technology)

Monitoring, price control and supply of edible oils.
