The Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) is the premier constitutional body responsible for selecting the finest administrative and technical talent for the Government of Himachal Pradesh. As a gateway to prestigious Class-I and Class-II gazetted positions, HPPSC offers candidates a chance to serve in one of India’s most scenic states with unparalleled job security and social status. General eligibility typically requires a Bachelor’s degree for administrative roles, while specialized positions like Assistant Professor or Assistant Engineer require a Master's degree or a B.E./B.Tech respectively.
Himachal Pradesh attained statehood on 25th January, 1971. Prior to this date, the function of Public Service Commission in respect of the civil services and posts in connection with the affairs of the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh were being discharged by the Union Public Service Commission under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. It was, therefore, incumbent on the State to have its own Public Service Commission. However, since a State Public Service Commission could be constituted simultaneously with the attainment of Statehood, the Union Public Service Commission, on a request from the Governor of the State of Himachal Pradesh with the approval of the President of India, agreed to serve the needs of Himachal Pradesh till the establishment of a Public Service Commission for the State or for a period of three months from 25th January, 1971 whichever was earlier.

Headquartered at Nigam Vihar in the capital city of Shimla, the Commission is mandated to conduct competitive examinations and interviews for various civil services and departmental posts. Its strategic importance lies in its role in shaping the state’s governance by recruiting officers who manage everything from district administration to healthcare and infrastructure.
The Commission maintains a robust regional presence, conducting examinations across major district headquarters including Shimla, Mandi, Dharamshala, and Solan. Whether it is the Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HPAS) or specialized recruitment for the Department of Health and Family Welfare, HPPSC ensures a transparent, multi-tier selection process that reflects the evolving needs of the hill state.
HPPSC recruits are placed under the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) scales or the corresponding State Pay Matrix. Entry-level Class-I officers (like HPAS) typically start at Level-10 (starting basic pay around ₹56,100), while Class-III roles begin at Level-6.
